Food Wed: Rice Overdose Food and Restaurant Review

Honestly speaking, I did not feel the pressure of being an OFW even on my first days here in UAE. Aside from I already have my family here, it is also because there are a lot of Kabayans everywhere. Literally, EVERYWHERE. Every corner of the city you can find them, it’s impossible if not. That means, you can also find a lot of Filipino restaurants here hiding at the corners of Abu dhabi. Luckily, we found a fantastic one!

RICE OVERDOSE — The Higher the Dosage the Better! I’ve always been a fan of unli-rice (Unlimited Rice) restaurants, even since when I was in the Philippines. In a country wherein most of the people will not live without eating rice, restaurants offering this kind of services is on top hit. So hands up to the owner of Rice Overdose for bringing this concept here in UAE!

I’ve been in Rice Overdose for a couple of times already and it’s always jam-packed especially at night. You can barely find a seat for you and your companions. But it’s fine because the staff will accommodate you well.

There is always somebody who will greet you as soon as you enter the restaurant. Even though during the rush hour, somebody will accommodate you properly. What admires me well with the staff is that they barely use pen and paper while taking orders, not even using tablet or anything. They will just ask for your order and then what you need to do next is to wait for your order. But of course they still need to write it down after to give to the kitchen crew.

The menu was arranged nicely with pictures every dish. It’s good for those who are lazy enough to read what’s on the menu. Believe me or not, there are some people who are like that (me). I also think that their menu looks appetizing. It will make you order more just by looking at it. *confetti*

I wasn’t able to take pictures of the whole place because really, it’s too crowded all of the time. I only took these two pictures when I came one morning, but I did not thought about taking a picture of the place as well. Sorry for that. But as you can see, the wall were painted with a nice shade of green. One side of the wall have a very nice design of bricks.

This photo on my IG shows the bricks i was telling you. (photo was taken  Valentines day 2017)

And for the most exciting part of this review, the Food. Unfortunately, some disaster happened to my mobile which causes all of my files including photos and videos deleted. ALL. The only picture I was able to keep was this photo from my instagram again.

As you can notice there were two different colors of the rice. What I like the most about Rice Overdose, aside from the until rice concept, is also the three types of rice that they offer for their kabayan customers. Namely, Adobo Rice, Steak Rice and last but not the least, Bagoong Rice. Just thinking about it makes me drool ** sorry.  As I was saying, they are offering three types of rice. These three names mentioned are names of famous Filipino Viands. But since I am alleric to Bagoong, I’ve only tasted the other two and my favorite one is the Steak Rice. I find the adobo rice a little too oily. Of course, they are also serving plain rice.

Rice overdose have different variety of foods that you can choose from. They offer beef, chicken, fish, seafoods, sushi, pancit, and other snacks that you can only find in the philippines. Namely,  Puto bumbong, Bibingkinitan, Bibinka etc.  Last but not the list, is what I think the OFWs miss the most! ISAW. Maybe not the most… haha but for me, it is. Yes, that’s right! They are offering the famous Filipino Street food, Isaw and also, Chicken feet and Gizzard. I know for some of you it may sound weird, but don’t jude it unless you’ve tasted it already. Believe me or not it tastes super yummy. Just make sure they’re cleaning it well though. Okay enough of that!

All in all, I can say that this restaurant can be rated at a very score of 4.2. Not because I came from the Philippines, but because I really love it’s warm place and very accomodating staff. Food is good too!

Go and Try! I dare you to taste Isaw though. *Wink*

Food Wed: Rice Overdose Food and Restaurant Review

Mama Fu’s Asian House

It has been a very long time since I’ve eaten something Asian aside from Filipino dishes that was being cooked at home. That is why I’m really excited to eat at Mama Fu’s. They offer Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Vietnamese dishes all in one place. Who wouldn’t crave for it? Think about the flavors. Literally mouth  watering.

I wasn’t able to take picture of the place because there were so many local customers which were enjoying their food.

The ceiling and the floor are both dimmed colors which complements well with the colors of the walls and the chairs which are green and orange. There were paintings hanging neatly on the wall.

The menu was properly organized. The amount of the dishes varies on what kind of meat was ordered whether you ordered it together with rice or noodles.

  • Veggies – 35 AED
  • Chicken – 45 AED
  • Beef – 50 AED
  • Shrimp – 50 AED

  1. Fresh basil spring roll (Appetizer)

Spring rolls are really famous in an Asian menu. According to one article that I read, famous chefs in Asia classified Vietnamese Spring rolls as the best among other countries offering it like China, Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia.

As the name states this spring roll was not fried. Fresh basil, mint, beans sprouts, and vegetables mixed all together with cold rice then wrapped with cellophane noodles. I think it also has peanuts inside which makes the taste a little different from what I am usually eating in the Philippines. I don’t like peanuts that much though. The dip also has peanuts which makes it a little buttery so instead of dipping mine with it, I dipped it with chili dip.

The appetizer was served immediately after we ordered. It took only 5 minutes for it to arrive served with the drinks too.

2. Lemon Sriracha Stir Fry Chicken

Asian tummies wouldn’t be full without any rice. There’s no doubt to that. This next was the best among the dishes that we’ve ordered. It it chicken stirred with Lemon sriracha sauce** mixed with vegetables.

**Fast fact! Sriracha Sauce was originated in Thailand. It is a type of hot sauce or chili sauce made from a paste of chili peppers, distilled vinegar, garlic, sugar, and salt.

I think the vegetables were half cooked. The broccoli, and the carrots were crunchy. You can tell that the peas was half cooked. It taste a little sweet. Healthy living at its finest.

3. Thai Cashew stir fry Chicken (or Beef)

It has the same ingredients as the Lemon Sriracha Stir fry Chicken but this one was served with toasted cashews. Also, instead of using Lemon Sriracha sauce, they put garlic soy sauce. The cashew complements well with the salty sauce. Not that good though, but it’s nice.

4. Sichuan Kung Pao Beef

HOT AND SPICY! This dish has celery, bell peppers, onions, chili peppers, peanuts and chestnuts tossed with a really spicy Kung pao** sauce.

**fast fact “Kung Pao Chicken (Chinese: 宫保鸡丁), also transcribed as Gong Bao or Kung Po, is a spicy stir-fry dish made with chicken, peanuts, vegetables, and chili peppers. The classic dish in Sichuan cuisine originated in the Sichuan Province of south-western China and includes Sichuan peppercorns. Although the dish is found throughout China, there are regional variations that are typically less spicy than the Sichuan serving. Kung Pao chicken is also a staple of westernized Chinese cuisine.” — wikipedia

The beef was tender when the dish was freshly served and also it’s easy to bite but as soon as it became colder it also became harder to chew. All I can say is that I love this (because I love spicy dish). Really tasty and too much serving enough for two rice. haha

Place & ambiance – 3.5/5

Staff – 3/5 (I’ve only seen the waitress smile a few times on our stay at the restaurant. Nobody asks us if we need anything or no unlike other restaurants that I’ve visited before. Also there was one time when we asked for a refill of our drink but they just took the glass and took a lifetime to bring the refilled glass.)

Food – 3/5 (I love it. I’m asian. haha)

Mama Fu’s Asian House

Tony Roma’s

It has been a while since I went out with my two food buddies namely, Ashkoook and Cheika, so we decided to go somewhere nice. We chose Tony Roma’s since,  again, we have vouchers. haha!

Tony Roma’s has been known for serving mouth watering ribs, steaks and sea foods. But it will not end with just that. They are also serving pasta and chicken. I think you must order Ribs at your first visit at Tony Roma’s but WE DID NOT!

PLACE 16409025_1572235092792076_566165481_o

A huge smile and a pleasant greeting will welcome you as soon as you enter the place. It has that normal hard wood furniture + dirty white walls + picture frames hanging on the wall combo. But I really like the big clock on one side of the wall and the black ceiling. It’s a very good place for a meeting while dining.

As soon as we took our seat, somebody came near us immediately to give the menu and take our orders. The staff also answer our questions politely and in a very good manner.

We only had some couple of technical malfunctions (haha). I’ll tell you later what.

The Menu is really pretty. I like the gray color effect of what I believe is a wooden table at the front cover of the menu.

There are so many choices to choose from.Ribs, Beef, Chicken, Pasta and sea foods. All in one! We were really excited to take our orders.

  1. Le Complementary dish

While waiting for our orders, they gave us chips and tomato dip (I don’t know what it is called). Since we were hungry, we finished it immediately and actually wants to ask for some more but it’s shameful so we just behaved. haha

I like the dip because it’s spicy and it has fresh tomatoes. It was served to us cold fresh from the chiller. I prefer a dip like this than hot.

 16444087_1572139332801652_208806287_o2. Vanilla and Strawberry Shake

I don’t know why they serve the shake first before the food. I think it’s much better if they will serve it while the food is there. Because you don’t know what a nice conversation can do to your nice drink.

It took about 20 minutes before our food was served. Just enough time to have a heartily talk with your friends and take instagramable shot of the place.

3. Mojo Chicken16444145_1572139249468327_639299982_o

The grilled chicken was tender and juicy as it was basted nicely with citrus and brown mustard mojo sauce. It’s also topped with pineapple salsa which complements nicely with the citrus feeling of the chicken.

It’s supposed to be served with broccoli  and rice but in Tony Roma’s you can choose what side dish you want. We chose Corn on the cob and the Loaded Baked Potato. It is a baked potato stuffed with beef and cheese.

16409152_1572139266134992_2071340543_o4. Chicken Alfredo

A food trip wouldn’t be complete without ordering a classic Chicken Alfredo. I’m probably making a review of Chicken Alfredo on every restaurants I’ve been.

It was creamy and tasty though I can still rate the Chicken Alfredo of Applebee’s higher than this one. Nothing special. Just Okay.

5. Shrimp and Salmon Piccata

This was the first time we ordered sea food dish from the menu because I am allergic to sea foods. But not with salmon so I think might as well try.

The salmon was grilled nicely just until it reached the brown color from the outside. It’s topped with shrimp with lemon sauce. I did not try the shrimp though.

16389024_1572139246134994_991764653_o 6. Premium Burger

We ordered chicken burger and not the one with beef patty. Because this dish was ordered specifically by Ashkook who is Muslim and is not eating beef. They told us if we want to change it the salary of the one who took our order will be cut. I feel bad about him but Ashkook point was that we are paying and it’s not our mistake because we already told them. Anyway, they changed the burger.

I did not try the burger so I wouldn’t make any reviews regarding it. I just noticed her taking off the top of the burger. I asked her why then she told me because it tastes like fish. I tried to taste the top part. I don’t know what she’s talking about. But I think it’s not fish oil but just mere butter.

Staff – 4/5 (Just had a little problems with the orders but they are nice)

Food – 3.5/5 (I like most the Mojo Chicken and the salmon but nothing special with the other dishes)

Ambiance – 4.5/5

Probably will come back next time for their ribs!

New Year’s Eve with Coldplay!

Going to a concert has always been on my bucket list since I was in college. I’ve always dreamed of going to a concert and join in the singing until I can’t hear any of my voice anymore. I imagined myself standing with the crowd and jump with them if they do, or raise my hand if I feel like it.

I always admire them. The artists, I mean. Why? because I always feel how they enjoy what they are doing. Doing their passion, doing what they love and at the same time inspiring others to do the same thing. *melodramatic song starts to play*

Before this blog post turns into something far from what the topic is supposed to be, let me start telling you the story of our journey on the 365th day of 2016. If you’re not interested you’re free to skip reading this blog.

A month and a half before the concert, an announcement was made that there will be an upcoming concert of coldplay that will be held on New Year’s eve in Abu Dhabi. I was really excited as soon as I heard the news and so was my colleagues who is coincidentally an avid fan of the band. We started telling each other that it’s a must to see this concert. We’ve waited until they started releasing the concert tickets. My friends bought the tickets and they included mine. Thank Goodness!

But even though we already had our tickets, there was still no assurance that we can go because we don’t have holiday at work. In short, we tried our very best to make our day free during new year’s eve. And it was successful. Well not that much.

On the 31st of December, I still had to go to work from 08:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. Open gate will be at 6:00. I even had to ride a carlift to reach earlier for a better spot. One of my friends, Rowie, was off this day so it was an opportunity to be at front line.

We arrived at the venue at 6:30 still gates closed but they are starting to get ready to open. THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE, as expected though. It was my first time to see a concert, meaning it’s my first time to fall in line with such a huge crowd but they’re awesome. Some were already singing coldplay songs. Some were having fun at the line with their friends. Some were having a hard time searching for their group. It was funny. A little bit exhausting but fun.

General admission tickets were the cheapest ticket sold for the concert. But even though, you can still find a perfect spot in front of the stage if you’re a fast runner.

YAS DU ARENA — It wasn’t the concert venue like what I expected it would be. It is an open football field. Meaning, it is a big flat surface then they just put a stage at the end of it. Unlike any other concert venues, or maybe the one in the Philippines (Araneta), the audience will be elevated so you can see the stage clearly even though you’re at the back. Here if you want to see the stage completely you have to buy the expensive tickets. But it’s fine though. All we want is to see them live and sing with them and just have fun with each other.

It was really an AMAZING/BEAUTIFUL/ FANTASTIC/WONDERFUL concert! I don’t know what word should I use to describe the feeling. There is no question on how great the performance of Coldplay is. I was watching the live performances of the band on YouTube and ever since then I already admired their craft.

Aside from the artists itself, the technical team also made their very best to make this concert truly a remarkable one for the audience. From the lightings, VTRs, the Confetti, the big flying balloons, and most especially the XYLOBANDS (my favorite).

Coldplay ended the 2016 with a blast! Countdown to 12:00 and then BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! FIREWORKS display!

The most important thing about New Year’s Eve is the food that will be served. During this special night, you must be with special people eating the most special food. In my case, I was with my special friends (not mentally retarded one. Trust me, they are 100% free from mind problems haha), eating special foods too!

Since most of us came directly after work, all of us were starving. It’s also not allowed to bring any food and drinks inside so there was no other choice but to buy inside the arena. As expected, it was very costly. We ordered from Burger Studio since it has less line compared to other stalls. 60 AED was paid for only one set of burger sandwich with fries and drinks. The Sandwich was big enough to fill the stomach before the concert starts. It also tastes unexpectedly good!

Since there were a lot of customers, I did not expect that the food will taste nice. I haven’t taken any picture of it because it’s too crowded and we were too busy to keep myself focused on taking a good shot of the food. I ordered beef with mushroom sandwich. As what I have said earlier, it’s big enough to fill the stomach until the rest of the evening at the concert. The cheese was melted nicely and mixed with the mushroom sauce which makes it a lot creamier and tastier. The beef was cut in a way that it will not be hard to bite.

I don’t know that it’s allowed to drink alcoholic beverages inside the arena during the concert. I thought that for the safety of the people being drunk will not be allowed inside. But I was wrong. As soon as we entered the venue they gave us wrist bands. Only those who are of legal age will be given this wrist bands. Why? Because having a chance to wear the wrist bands will be given a chance to have DRINK ALL YOU CAN BEER. Though we have wrist bands we did not drink.

Of course, New Year’s eve will not be complete if you will not spend it with your family. So after the concert we went directly home and had karaoke party with my family and friends!

I am hoping that the rest of 2017 will be as amazing as my last day of 2016.

New Year’s Eve with Coldplay!

Graffiti Burger (Abu Dhabi)

(if you don’t want to read some useless mumbles, skip the first paragraph)

I am always riding the bus going to work if I stayed at the city the night before. With one hour ride and a cold foggy afternoon, sometimes you can’t help but to stare outside the window and start day dreaming. With a WOMAN my age, probably you would be thinking about what on earth are you doing with your life. You might also be thinking on how to make your life a little exciting and colorful. Maybe you are also dreaming about who you want to be after 5 years of working or maybe what you could do to earn extra income. And then maybe (or is it just me) what you will eat for dinner without spending too much. That was when a single ray of light on a certain spot crossed your eyes which caused it to sparkle. I saw Graffiti Burger. I told myself I will eat there whatever the odds may be.

But that’s not what really happened.Daydreaming can also be done at work, sorry.

My friends and I decided to go eat at some burger spot near their home. It’s called PINK BURGER. We were always checking the store because of it’s cute place with lighted tables. Also, the name is a little bit catchy leaving you with a question ‘Are the burgers there colored PINK?’ But the night we came, there were no tables and we were informed that it was borrowed by another branch and will be returned by January 10. So we decided to go somewhere else.

Then Rahp suggested GRAFFITI BURGER.

I noticed that most of the restaurants here in Abu Dhabi have very small space. Just enough for kitchen, serving area, and 2 to 3 tables. I am not referring to the ones located at the malls. I’m referring to those restaurants you can find at the streets of abu dhabi.

Same goes with Graffiti. It has small space. Only two groups can eat inside the restaurant itself. But it’s okay because I’ve noticed that most of their customers are ordering for take away (Take out) which is not bad because their packaging for take away foods are really cool! Like if I would be ordering for take away, I will keep the paper bag.

They have very beautiful graffiti-ed walls creatively painted in neon and is lighted with LED lights which makes the color pop out. Very nice!

They have the typical menu for a burger shop which consists of burger/ sandwich + Fries + drinks. So it’s not that hard to choose what to eat. We’ve tried three burgers from the menu.

1. Graffiti Burger

Of course I tried the burger named after the restaurant but I was a little disappointed because there is nothing special with this burger except to the fact that they are using graffiti sauce which I think consists of mayonnaise and some spices, not sure though. Just the normal burger with tomato and lettuce. The only thing I can say is that the patty is really tasty and meaty.

2. Mushroom Burger

The grilled onion give this burger a little kick of spiciness and sweetness at the same time. The patty is really consistent with it’s meatiness. Aside from the chunks of mushrooms which adds texture to the burger, the mushroom sauce that they put really makes the burger flavorful and tasty. The melted cheese is matching well with the mushroom sauce which leaves a super creamy taste.

3. Smoke burger

This burger is really YUMMY! The smoked bacon matched with that tasty patty and smoke sauce makes this burger leaves you speechless. I would highly recommend you to try this!

All burgers are in small sizes for the price being paid. Though I think they are focusing more on giving the customers delicious patties which makes it a little convincing to pay this amount. If you really want to enjoy the burgers, try ordering the burgers in “Double.” They will give you one burger packed with two super duper yummy patties. **hearts everywhere** I’m in love with their packaging. Definitely grattified with black prints.

4. Spicy Graffiti Style Fries

The spicy fries that was served to us wasn’t spicy at all. The only thing that makes it spicy is the pickled jalapeno. I loved the jalapeno. It has that slightly sour and spicy taste which I like. They also put a little bit of chili flakes to add more spiciness but still not enough. Maybe it’s just me.

Overall rating will be 4.8/5! Great and clean place but small. Beautiful graffitied walls and paper bags. Nice staff. Food served hot and freshly cooked.  Small sized burger and a little bit pricey but became reasonable because of their presentation and the super delicious patty.

I will definitely put this on my “I should come back here” list.

Graffiti Burger (Abu Dhabi)

So there is this one mobile application wherein you can buy vouchers using your load for 2 to 5 AED and then use these vouchers to buy meals at some restaurants for buy 1 take 1 free. Ever since we’ve discovered this application, we always buy vouchers mostly for Applebee’s because to tell you the truth, Applebee’s is simply amazing!

PLACE (Applebee’s Dalma mall, UAE)

The restaurant has it’s modern bright vibes. Green painted walls and colorful backgrounds. Hardwood tables and chairs. With frames of different countries and famous landmarks across the wall, who would say no for a selfie?

The staff were surprisingly nice. They always make you feel welcomed and important as they wear their pleasant smile as soon as you  enter the restaurant and throughout their service for you.

What we ordered?

The food was served hot and freshly cooked. Most of the time we’re just waiting for maximum of 20 minutes before we can eat. We ordered 4 dishes for the price of 2.

1. Cowboy Burger (Chicken)

Hey hey hey!! A visit to applebee’s wouldn’t be complete without even trying one of their burgers. As a starter we tried Cowboy Burger. I think nobody would ask why it’s called Cowboy burger. It has big bun and it is normally packed with beef bacon and bbq sauce. But since we went to the restaurant with someone who is not eating beef, we switched it to chicken. Together with fries any cowboy will not think twice to order it again next time!

2.Country fried chicken

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE! I think we visited at Applebee’s for a couple of times already and this dish will never removed from my list of ‘MUST ORDER’ from their menu. I like the mix of their gravy and garlic mashed potatoes. That one, together with nicely breaded boneless fried chicken and mixed vegetables is a complete package! Will definitely order it again next time.

4. Sizzling Chicken Fundido

With all the chickens that we’ve ordered I think this one is a little bit normal for my taste buds. The chicken breast was cut nicely. It is served with crispy square-cut potatoes which i think wasn’t crispy at all. Sizzling plate wasn’t sizzling also as it was served in our table. But overall the taste was good.

Staff: 5/5 (mostly kabayans haha)

Place: 5/5 (Nice and Clean!)

Food: 4/5

Will definately try their beef next time…
